The ensemble L'Orfeo Barockorchester is an Austrian ensemble of Baroque and Classical music founded in 1996, devoted to historically informed interpretation, namely the interpretation of old instruments (or copies of old instruments).
L'Orfeo Barockorchester was founded in 1996 by violinist and conductor Michi Gaigg and flutist and oboist Carin van Heerden.
Michi Gaigg is an Austrian violinist influenced by Nikolaus Harnoncourt during her studies at the Salzburg Mozarteum and then continued her training in baroque violin with Ingrid Seifert and Sigiswald Kuijken. She has worked with Frans Brüggen, Christopher Hogwood, René Jacobs, Ton Koopman and Hermann Max.
In 1983, she founded the L'Arpa Festante ensemble in Munich, which she managed until 1995, before returning to Austria where she founded L'Orfeo Barockorchester in 1996.
The Orfeo Barockorchester initially counted from 15 to 17 musicians to evolve then to 25 musicians.
The Orfeo Barockorchester has presented several world premieres and has received multiple awards for its recordings.
